Abstract
Migration of sensitised lymphocytes in swine was studied by measuring the lymphocyte proliferative response to K88 antigen and to class specific antisera.
Oral administration of antigen (E. coli 08 : 087: K88ab) resulted in the appearance of K88 positive cells in peripheral and mammary lymph nodes In lactating sows these cells appear preferentially in mammary lymph nodes. The most effective vaccination schedule was found to be frequent vaccination over a long period.
A route of migration of lymphocytes is postulated and we conclude that oral vaccination of pregnant sows results in K88 positive cells, which — during lactation — home to the mammary lymph nodes.
