Abstract

Both the acute and chronic forms of cholecystitis may occur in the absence of gall-stones in up to 10% of all cases but this is obviously to be regarded as a rarity. In the early stages of the acute disease if the cystic duct is not blocked by a stone it may be occluded due to the effects of hyperemia and oedema. In this way bile is prevented from entering or leaving the gall-bladder. In chronic disease with or without stones the gall-bladder function is impaired and dependent on the degree to which the cystic duct is damaged, will show impaired filling and emptying.
