Abstract
It is apparent from the foregoing sections that the First Energy R & D Programme has had a large number of successes over a very wide range of topics in the evolution of new techniques and equipment, the advancement of our understanding of energy systems and the processes involved, and in the establishment of definitive objectives for future R & D efforts. Of particular note is the way in which a true European R & D climate has been created with close collaboration between laboratories, both academic and commercial, throughout the member states. It is also significant that this collaboration has developed to an extent far exceeding the actual contracts and financial commitments of the Community R & D Programmes. In effect, these programmes and the contacts induced by them have had the effect of stimulating collaborative work in areas outside the actual programmes. There has also been an element of indirect co-ordination of research throughout the Community through the publicity given to the programmes and its consequent effect on the various national programmes.
