Abstract
In the primary and adventitious roots of maize seedlings, the stele presents an excellent experimental system to study the rearrangement of protein components in relation to differentiation. The fact that the stele and the cortex (plus the epidermis) can be easily separated in the growing part of the root [2] considerably facilitates the biochemical studies of the stele. A survey of the enzyme profiles of the stele and the cortex provided quantitative evidence on the rearrangement of proteins common to all the cell types in the course of differentiation ([5] and I. V. Zeleneva et al., submitted for publication). Two independent approaches of high specificity, e. g., antigen-antibody and lectin-erythrocyte interactions, were employed to expose the stele-specific proteins [2,3].
