Some Physical Aspects of Continuous Low Dosage of Anthelmintics via Drinking Water

Abstract

Factors influencing the drinking behaviour of calves receiving continuous low level dosage of anthelmintic in the drinking water were studied. An indoor experiment is described which indicates a positive correlation between effectiveness of parasite control and level of water intake. Similar effects were observed under grazing conditions. Data are presented relating water intake to calf weight and rainfall for a variety of anthelmintic treatments.

To achieve consistent dose levels anthelmintics should be included only in the first 0.5 gallons*of liquid which calves consume daily. In grazing experiments, where this was carried out using both soluble and insoluble anthelmintics, no evidence of unpalatability was noticed. Observations are presented on the drinking behaviour of individual calves consuming phenothiazine from a common trough under these circumstances. Details are given of a proposed system for the automatic administration of anthelmintics in drinking water.
