Abstract

Even those who are only slightly familiar with pharmacokinetic concepts will know that the two-compartment open model is often used in explaining the course of plasma concentrations of a drug [1]. What is often forgotten is that this model is primarily not a biological model but a mathematical one, although the latter is compatible with some biological facts. This has led to the assumption that a biological model is the basis for the mathematical model.
