Abstract

Although various mycoplasma species have been found in man, only Mycoplasma pneumoniae is known to affect the human respiratory tract. Together with viral infections, Mycoplasma pneumoniae is among the most common causes of acute infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract in man [1]. Of a large series of patients with clinical symptoms of an acute respiratory infection seen over a 10-year period (1965–1975), 23% had antibody titers indicating the possibility of a recent infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
