Hyperosmolar Urea

  • Chapter
Second-Trimester Abortion

Abstract

The ideal method of managing patients requesting second-trimester abortion is still a matter of controversy. The most widely used regimens at this time include intraamniotic administration of hypertonic saline, hyperosmolar urea, prostaglandin F (PGF), and dilatation and evacuation. This chapter reviews the administration of hyperosmolar urea for the induction of elective second-trimester abortion as practiced at the Fertility Control Center of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
