Abstract

At the present time, there is unprecedented interest in the subject of nutrition in the country by the people, by consumer advocate groups, by health food advocates, by voluntary health agencies like the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, and by the US Government through the National Institutes of Health and various Congressional committees. All are advising the American public what to do about diet to prevent chronic disease. The question is: are we ready? Is the data base underlying such recommendations firm?
