The Role of Radiation Therapy in Malignant Lymphomas, Including Hodgkin’s Disease

Lymphomas 1

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 4))

Abstract

The two decades spanning 1960 to 1980 have been witness to a remarkable expansion in knowledge concerning the nature, management, and prognosis of the malignant lymphomas including Hodgkin’s disease. This rapid gain in understanding, which is reflected in the outstanding therapeutic achievements of today, owes much to the painstaking investigation of several generations of radiation oncologists. Their efforts, often thwarted by primitive technologies, limited by patient referral patterns, and oftentimes opposed by a hostile medical opinion which deemed these disease fatal by definition, passed through many of the vicissitudes — the blind alleys, the frustating sidetracks — that many great scientific endeavors have had to negotiate. Finally, in the mid 1960s, the modern conceptions emerged. Before presenting these fundamental principles a brief journey through the annals of history will be undertaken to outline some of the milestones along the road to the present position.
