Abstract
Several reports have indicated a possible role for immunological mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Crohn’s disease (1–5). For this reason it is important to analyse the cellular infiltrate in the bowel wall of patients with Crohn’s disease, as this may give a clue to the type of immunological reaction involved. Literature data about the nature of the lymphoid cells in the bowel wall of Crohn’s disease are inconclusive. The presence of T-cells especially in the deeper layers of the bowel wall has been stressed (6,7). This is surprising since throughout the bowel wall many lymphoid aggregates often characterized by germinal centres, can be found, structures known to contain B-cells in lymph nodes, spleen and rheumatoid synovium (8,9).
