Abstract

The FAO Conference at its 4th Session in 1948 decided to establish an international organization on fisheries for the Mediterranean. In July 1949 the FAO Director-General dispatched to the interested countries an invitation to attend the conference on the establishment of GFCM. It was called in September 1949 in Rome. Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Turkey and Yugoslavia took part in the Conference. Representatives from Spain, USA, Vatican City State and ICES attended in an observer capacity. The Conference approved the Agreement on the establishment of the General Fisheries Council for the Mediterranean and submitted it to FAO and member states for acceptance.
