Abstract

The considerable growth of activities in the World Ocean have caused a significant increase of information transmitted through radio channels. Since 1968, for instance, the increase of the world-wide radio interchange volume in the maritime radio channels has reached 5 to 10% a year for the radiotelegraph and up to 20% for the radiotelephone. This has brought about a considerable overloading of frequency bands given for marine services and an increase in interrelated interference as well as a decrease in the reliability of maritime telecommunication, especially long-distance ones. Research conducted in the USSR and other countries has shown that by the eighties, considerable difficulties may appear in providing for the safety navigation and operational management of fleets if the communication link between ships is implemented by traditional methods and techniques.
