Abstract

A cancer of the lung which is not diagnosed until after it causes symptoms is usually late in the course of the disease and is usually associated with a poor picgnosis. A cancer of the lung diagnosed before the onset of symptoms is not always early in the course of the disease, but the survival rate is better when the tumors are small or early. Though it remains to be proved whether the mortality rate is lower in patients with early lung cancer, it is generally considered to be a much more desirable situation and considerable effort has been directed toward this as a goal.
