Abstract

Techniques of fiberoptic bronchoscopy in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) are applicable even in the small premature infant. Limitations occur because current equipment lacks suction capacity and directional flexibility in those instruments small enough to pass through the endotracheal tubes used in the neonate. Addition of directional capability or a suction port renders the instrument too large to pass through these endotracheal tubes.
