Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to recall some basic concepts and methods that pertain to the appearance, persistence, and waning of disease in groups of persons. These are the elements of epidemiology. It is assumed that the reader is more than familiar with epidemiological principles, but I hope that those who are deeply involved in intricate research problems will enjoy the relaxation of reverting to fundamentals.
