Surface Degradation and Protective Treatments

  • Chapter
The Development of Gas Turbine Materials

Summary

The environmental conditions under which various materials are required to operate in the compressor and turbine section of gas turbines are briefly discussed. Most attention is given to materials and environmental degradation problems encountered in aero engines, with brief reference to components used in marine and industrial engines where the environment may be more aggressive.

Numerous coatings and surface treatments are employed to protect compressor components against corrosion and corrosion-initiated phenomena such as corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion. Compressor components in helicopter engines operating under desert conditions are subject to erosion damage caused by sand ingested through the engine intake.

Nickel and cobalt alloys employed for hot components in the turbine section may be degraded by oxidation, corrosion and erosion processes. The types of coating materials and methods of depositing them to combat such degradation are described.
