Synthetic Polyisoprene Rubbers

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: The Developments Series ((POLS,volume 37))

Summary

Synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene manufactured to a high degree of stereoregularity has become an important polymer for the rubber industry during the last decade. Assisted by considerable research and application development work, a selective usage pattern has emerged whereby the rubber is employed alone and in blends with other rubbers to exploit its outstanding processing qualities and its unique properties.

It can be used in any application where natural rubber is the traditional choice and few, if any, compound changes are necessary. Changes in mixing and processing are required and result in significant time and power savings.

The major usage is in tyres, especially in critical compounds where its uniformity, quality and good flow properties allow the tyre constructors to meet the high standards demanded of steel-reinforced radial tyres. Engineering components such as springs and mountings form another major usage where its unique properties of low creep and compression set resistance are exploited.

Although modifications of the polymer have been attempted none, so far, have further improved performance of the polymer without detraction from its processing characteristics or vulcanisate properties.
