Ethylene—Propylene Rubbers

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: The Developments Series ((POLS,volume 37))

Summary

Ethylene—propylene elastomers have become and will continue to be widely used products of superior quality. After a slow start, their position on the market is now clear and it is unlikely they will be ousted from this position.

After giving some information on the production cycle and the intrinsic properties of these elastomers, there follows a classification of the types which are available. These cover practically all the requirements of the industry, and bearing in mind the needfor ever greater economies in terms of energy and work, only the most suitable forms have been put on the market.

For the technologist, knowledge has been updated on curing systems, compounding and the more interesting stages of processing, giving particular attention to mixing.

The applications mentioned are the more well known but newer ones in the automotive sector, building, electrical insulation, domestic appliances, agriculture, etc. are also mentioned. Information is also given on uses of ethylene—propylene elastomers where the products do not undergo the traditional processing of the rubber industry, but are used as additives to various materials such as plastics, lubricating oils, bitumen and waxes, in order to modify or improve certain properties.
