Abstract

The types and amounts of wastes that can be used as digester feedstock are many and varied. As described in Chapter 7, much work has been carried out with pilot-plant studies of digestion of these wastes, but only a little has been done with full commercial-scale plant. The exception is domestic sewage-sludge digestion. Even in this field, where large-scale digestion started about 70 years ago, little detailed information has been published on the running of plants. For the other wastes, large-scale digesters are only just beginning to be built and tested. Because these digesters are in the developmental stage the results of long periods of continuous running are not generally available. Many have been started only a year or less ago and part of this time has been taken up with bringing the digesters.
