Abstract

Agricultural production is affected by trace metals in a number of ways. Some soils may contain above-normal concentrations as a result of the type of parent material from which they are derived. Others may, for similar reasons or because the elements present occur in forms unavailable to plants, exhibit trace element deficiencies which have to be corrected by applications, either to the land or directly to the crop, of appropriate chemicals in order to achieve satisfactory yields. Both excesses, and deficiencies of trace metals may, because crop composition is affected, influence animal production.
