Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction

  • Chapter
Book cover Clinical Urology Illustrated

Abstract

Mechanical causes are responsible for the vast majority of patients developing lower urinary tract obstruction of urine, but neurological, parasympathetic drug-induced, infective or functional causes should always be suspected in a person presenting under the age of 50 years. The diagnosis and management of the neurogenic bladder is discussed in chapter XI. Because of the preponderance of prostatic, bladder outlet and urethral stricture pathology males commonly develop retention of urine, or mechanical voiding difficulty, while this is rare in females.
