Biological Effects of Gamma-Г Glutamyl Taurine (Glutaurine): A New Parathyroid Hormone

Abstract

While it is well established that parathyroid hormone is produced in the parathyroid gland, it has recently become apparent that the parathyroid gland may also have another endocrine function. This hypothesis is based in part upon the observation that hypoparathyroidism is accompanied by symptoms that resemble vitamin A deficiency (Varró, 1964; Brodehl et al., 1967; Henkin, 1968; Gardner, 1969; Pastinszky and Rácz, 1974). Moreover, the parathyroid gland contains oxyphil cells, as well as the parathyroid hormone-producing chief cells. Although the role of the oxyphil cells has not been established, it has been suggested that they have an endocrine function (Tremblay and Peärse, 1959; Tremblay and Cartier, 1961; Halver, 1973).
