Abstract
Although the presence of taurine in biological tissues has been known for almost a century and a half, the functional significance(s) of this compound and its immediate precursors has not, as yet, been clearly delineated. Proposed roles for taurine in retina, muscle, and heart as well as other tissues are described in other chapters of this volume.
