Abstract
Almost half of any population at risk will be affected by one or other of the common infectious diseases in any one year. In the developed world, however, largely due to improvements in nutrition, the environment, and the use of antibiotics for the treatment of complications, specific infectious diseases — upper respiratory, chickenpox, measles, mumps, TB and hepatitis — account for less than 1% of deaths and less than 2% of hospital admissions.
