Abstract
Retrolental fibroplasia is a condition based on a lesion of the developing retinal vascular system caused by neonatal oxygen administration to prematurely born infants. The symptoms of this condition were first described by Terry in 1942, but it was not until 1951 that oxygen administration was identified as the cause of these symptoms (Campbell, 1951). Controlled studies (Patz et al., 1952; Kinsey and Hemphill, 1955; Kinsey, 1956) confirmed the hypothesis that oxygen administration played an important role in the pathogenesis of RLF.
