An Acid Deposition Perspective for Northeastern Alberta and Northern Saskatchewan

  • Chapter
Book cover Long-Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants

Abstract

The deposition of S and N compounds within the study area is low at the present time, but may increase, mainly because of emissions growth.

In the bedrock geology there is a zone of calcareous material running through the area. Systems lying to the north of this zone exist on the Precambrian Shield and are highly sensitive to acid deposition. Systems lying to the south are influenced by a very complex network of buffering agents and are relatively insensitive.

One-half of the study area consists of freshwater lake systems that have water chemistry parameters which indicate they are highly sensitive to acid deposition. Present day levels of acidity measurements taken from the sensitive lakes indicate that the lake support healthy fish populations.

Fortunately, time appears available to determine the magnitude of any future effects and to permit steps to be taken in time to prevent such occurrence. Recommendations regarding the research needed to guide future action include air and water monitoring programs.
