Abstract
Laguna Figueroa is a lagoonal complex with an evaporite flat and salt marsh separated from the ocean by a barrier dune (Vonder Haar and Gorsline, 1977). The evaporite flat is composed of evaporitic minerals (anhydrite, aragonite, gypsum and halite) and sand clastics (quartz). Beneath a thin surface layer, laminated sediments with a stratified microbial community are found. These laminated sediments are a cohesive fabric of minerals, microbes and gelatinous material and cover an extensive area along the evaporite flat/salt marsh interface (Horodyski et al., 1977). Watered by seawater percolating from beneath the barrier dune these intermittently submerged sediments form characteristic desiccation polygons (Horodyski and Vonder Haar, 1975).
