An In-Situ Method for Determining Microbial Manganese Oxidation Rates in Sediments

  • Chapter
Biomineralization and Biological Metal Accumulation

Abstract

An in-situ dialysis technique has been developed to quantitatively examine chemical and bacterial rates of manganese oxidation in sediments under the constraint of diffusion-limited conditions. In a laboratory study of the technique using sediments which have been spiked with manganese oxidizing bacteria, the parameters for both abiotic and microbial processes determined directly with this method agree well with independent measurements of these quantities.
