Studies on the Constancy of the Value of the Ionic Product Ca2+ × CO 2-3 in the Haemolymph of the Freshwater Snail Lymnaea Stagnalis

Biomineralization and Biological Metal Accumulation

Abstract

Many molluscan species are able to maintain a more or less constant haemolymph Ca concentration despite large fluctuations in the availability of this element in the milieu (cf. De With, 1977). This ability is mainly attributed to the activity of a buffer system capable to remove excess Ca from the haemolymph or to release it in case of shortage. The involved deposits of Ca, mostly in the form of CaCO3, are found in the shell and the soft body parts. Because of the involvement of CaCO3 important interactions occur between Ca2+ and CO 2-3 metabolism. The latter metabolism is also connected with acid-base balance.
