Abstract

Quasi-stellar objects have been discovered with redshifts up to z = 3.53. The object of record redshift was discovered 8 years ago. The only other object with z > 3.5 was discovered (using purely optical techniques) about 8 weeks ago. A critical discussion of the reality of this apparent upper limit to QSO redshifts is given. Because numerous quasars are now known with z > 3, such a limit could imply that quasars first became visible within a rather short time interval.
