Relativistic Electrons in Galaxies and their Nonthermal Radiation from Radio to Gamma Radiation

Abstract

Relativistic electrons are responsible for most of the nonthermal radiation in galaxies. Their dynamics is determined by interactions with cosmic magnetic, radiation and matter fields. After summarizing the main radiation processes we discuss recent radio and gamma ray observations of our Galaxy and derive observational constraints on the propagation parameters for electrons. In particular, we concentrate on the nature of relativistic electron sources and the nature of gamma ray point sources. A discussion of nonthermal radiation from selected extragalactic objects which includes its contribution to the extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background completes the review.
