Abstract

In the first part of this paper, the equilibria of adsorption and segregation are treated in a symmetrical manner, referring to the Fowler-Guggenheim isotherms.

In the second part, examples of first order transition on well defined surfaces (single crystals) are given for

  1. i)

    sulphur adsorption on silver

  2. ii)

    carbon segregation on nickel.

In the last part, the interest of heterogeneous catalysis on single crystals is illustrated by two examples: CO methanation on nickel and CO oxidation on platinum.
