Chemisorption of Metals on Metals and on Semiconductors

Interfacial Aspects of Phase Transformations

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((ASIC,volume 87))

Abstract

There are only five noble gases but some sixty five metals. Noble gases have a simple electron configuration which makes their theoretical treatment simpler. They have high vapor pressures which invites their study under equilibrium conditions. Not so the metals: many have complicated electron configurations with several groups of electrons participating in bonding and many of them have low vapor pressures so that quasi-equilibrium studies can be done only with vapor beams impinging on surfaces heated to high temperatures. Condensed metal vapors have the unpleasant property of producing electrical shorts, emission centers on fluorescent screens and other disturbances, and hot surfaces frequently tend to be contaminated by carbon. Nevertheless, a large amount of information has been accumulated of which only a small amount can be presented in the form of typical examples. For additional information see recent reviews. 1–3
