Residence Time and Deposition of Particle-Bound Atmospheric Substances

  • Chapter
Deposition of Atmospheric Pollutants

Abstract

By aid of measured mass size distributions the atmospheric residence times for particle-bound substances can be determined. The distributions are considerably varying and are related to the vapour pressure of the substance. By assumption of a stationary equilibrium in the airborne state the residence times can be related to each other by use of the boiling and melting points. The absolute values are mainly influenced by the wet residence time - determined by the atmospheric water cycle - of the considered region.

The residence time within the mixing layer of the troposphere is inversely proportional to the total deposition velocity. According to their mass size distributions the substances can be classified into local, regional and long-range pollutants. An estimate of the dry to wet deposition ratio of a substance can be made. The behaviour of metals and the acid rain ions SO =4 , NO 3 and Cl is discussed.
