Reduction of Indomethacin Side Effect with β-Cyclodextrin in Gastro-Intestinal Tract

Summary

In a 3 week comparative study the side effect of indomethacin and indomethacin-ß-cyclodextrin complex treatment was compared on the mucous membrane of the gastro-intestinal tract in rats. The drugs were administered orally and the tissue alterations were studied in both groups under light and electron microscope. The investigations indicate that the side effects on the mucous membrane (erosions, haemorrhage, ulceration) could be markedly reduced and retarded in time with indomethacin-ß-cyclodextrin complex. The most peculiar protective effect of ß-cyclodextrin were observed on the gastric mucous membrane· The side effects on the mucous membrane of small intestine developed several days later in case of indomethacin-ß-cyclodextrin treatment as compared with pure indomethacin administration.
