Abstract

The radiation in radiation chemistry is simply the energy source that initiates the reactions. Activation of molecules by high energy radiation is briefly compared with activation by heat and ultraviolet light. The transfer of energy from various types of high energy radiation to matter is discussed. X and y rays: photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, e e+ pair production. High energy electrons and ions: electronic excitation and ionization of matter, emission of electromagnetic radiation, elastic scattering. Rates of energy loss. Penetration ranges. Charged particles below 1000. eV Neutrons.
