Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 96))

Abstract

Following a general description of the motion of the Earth about its center of mass, the main features of the new 1980 IAU nutation series are described, and the definition of the new Celestial Ephemeris Pole is justified. The use of excitation functions for polar motion and UT1 is explained. Then, the main characteristics of the short period components of the polar motion and UT1 are described, together with their geophysical implications. In connection with the long periodic terms of polar motion and UT1, the problems of core-mantle coupling, of the secular drift of the mean pole and of the non-tidal Earth acceleration are discussed.
