Abstract

The concept of meaning arose repeatedly in the preceding chapters. This can hardly arouse wonder. Mill’s theory of meaning is fully embedded in his theory of denotation and connotation. As a consequence, important elements of his view of meaning have already received attention. It is nevertheless desirable to consider Mill’s ideas concerning meaning in a separate chapter. In this way, the opportunity can likewise be taken to devote additional attention to a number of themes from semantics that have until now been accorded less solicitude than they deserve.
