Abstract

Following the pioneering activities in the last two decades, our knowledge of the magnetic and plasma environment around the planets, the Earth among them, has grown very fast. In this short review we shall summarize how the observational data are organized, in particular discussing some technical and mathematical aspects and the known mechanisms capable to generate magnetic fields outside and inside a planet. We then present a panorama of results of the observations onboard satellites and space probes. The interpretation of the results and their implications on the planetary internal and external structure are also outlined.
