Some Remarks on the Formation of Terrestrial Planets

Abstract

The process of terrestrial planet formation in a low mass protoplanetary disk is examined. Emphasis is placed on the role played by the gas during coagulation and settling of grains to the central plane of the system. The effects of turbulence are also taken into account. Gravitational instability in a gas-grain thin disk is shown to be a possible mechanism of planetesimal formation.

The theory by which terrestrial planets formed by accumulation of planetesimals in a gas free protoplanetary swarm is briefly reviewed.
