Summary

A method for the determination of total purgable organohalogen compounds in water is described. The halogenated organic compounds are purged from the water samples (typically 1 liter) with oxygen for 30 minutes at 60°C. The purged compounds are continuously combusted at 950°C and the produced halides (Cl-, Br-, F-) are trapped and quantified by ion-chromatography.

The method gives the total amount of each group of purgable organohalides and can be applied to a wide range of water samples. It offers the simultaneous determination of low molecular weight chlorinated and brominated secondary products formed during drinking water chlorination. The detection limit of the described method is found to be below 0.1 µg of halide equivalent per liter.

The potential of the method is illustrated by studies on water pollution. It proves to be a valuable supplement to the analyses of individual pollutants determined by gas chromatography and is useful in surveying for heavy pollutant loads.
