Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 93))

Abstract

The broad HI zones detected in 21-cm emission near three HII regions, NGC 281, IC 5146 and NGC 1579, are described and compared. The formation of such zones in low and medium density gas by dissociation of H2 with UV radiation from the exciting star, is discussed. The HI spin temperatures are probably in the range 100K–300K and for the two most evolved sources the zones are expanding. Neither of these shows evidence of the thin dense shell of shocked gas predicted to lie just ahead of an ionization front.
