Hybrid Approaches to Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition Theory and Applications

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((ASIC,volume 81))

Abstract

A general viewpoint of pattern recognition is introduced. Two major approaches to pattern recognition; namely, decision-theoretic (or statistical) and syntactic (or structural), are then discussed within the general framework. The approach of template- matching can be interpreted as a special case of the two major approaches. Various ways of mixing the approaches are discussed.
