Beneficence, Supererogation, and Role Duty

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Philosophy and Medicine ((PHME,volume 11))

Abstract

When people are sick, they need medical treatment; as we often say, they need help. But why do doctors and other medical personnel aid the sick? Is their work an expression of some general duty of beneficence? Is there a form of beneficence which is not a duty but supererogatory? What is the relation of beneficence to other duties?
