Abstract

The main factors that affect the trapping of stellar orbits around stable periodic orbits in spiral or barred galaxies are reviewed. Such trapping enhances or destroys the imposed field, therefore it is important in producing self-consistent models of galaxies. Various possible models of self-consistent bars are considered. It seems that most bars end at corotation.

Paper presented at the workshop “Orbits in Galaxies”, organized at the European Southern Observatory (CERN, Geneva) on 5–6 May 1980.
