Abstract

The stress protection of bone by internal fixation plates causes a loss of bone and leads to weakening. Several investigations show that the extent of bone atrophy depends on the stiffness of the plates (1–10). Therefore a low axial stiffness of the plates would be desirable, whereas the bending- and torsional stiffness should be high enough to guarantee the stability of the osteosynthesis and uncomplicated bone healing. Such conditions are only obtainable if the material and the size of the plate are suitable. The finite-elemente-analysis is used and tested to solve such complicated problems. With this procedure, the influence of different plate materials on the stress distribution of bone was simulated. Measurements of the stress distribution on the bone are performed to control the results of the calculations.
