Abstract
In the early 1950’s renal scanning was first attempted using radioiodinated contrast media but these were soon superseded by mercurial complexes, notably chlormerodrin, labelled with 203Hg or 197Hg. These compounds had the advantage over contrast media that they became fixed in the renal cortex thus facilitating imaging and for many years they were the reagents of choice.
