Abstract
The theme developed by Professor Tomlinson was the balance between design and chance in the development of form in a plant. As both these influences will be felt during the growth of any organism, and to different degrees in different species and in particular individuals, it is necessary to adopt a balanced and flexible stance on this issue. This Professor Tomlinson was careful to do, and in consequence most of my remarks will be confined to underlining his conclusions and to aspects where some shift of emphasis is possible.
