Cognitive Analysis of Social Behavior

Abstract

“The strenght of (social psychology) and the main feature distinguishing it from other social sciences were traditionally seen in its use of experimental methods of research. The aim was, some forty years ago, to create a reliably scientific approach to human social behaviour. This developed in due course into experimental social psychology which overwhelmingly dominated (and still does) the research and writing in the subject. But what started as an exciting new venture became over the years, as is often the case, a complacent and unquestioned old routine. It is therefore not surprising that the ‘experimental’ tradition found itself at the receiving end of most of the attacks directed in the last ten years or so at the kind of research done by social psychologists” (Tajfel, 1978a, p.IX).
